On Saturday 3 June, the usual black and red seen at the Bullcreek Leeming Amateur Football Club turned to blue in support of non-profit organisation Beyond Blue. Beyond Blue address issues associated with depression, anxiety and related mental disorders.

The fundraiser held at Beasley Park aimed to raise $5,000 for Beyond Blue in its inaugural year, however the club ended up raising nearly double the intended target with around $9,000 raised.

Club President Mike Petkovich said “The support we’ve received from those not just associated with the Bullcreek Leeming Football Club, but also the wider community, has been astounding”.

The event was initiated due to the deaths of three Bullcreek Leeming players in 2010, 2011 and 2012. The tragic deaths have sparked concern about the mental health of members at the club.

The fundraiser featured specially designed blue jumpers which were worn in all three fixtures against Melville. The day also featured a raffle, auction and a fundraiser page was set up for donations.

The club looks to make the fundraiser an annual event in the future “On behalf of all BLAFC players, members and the committee, thank you for your support and we look forward to doing it all again, bigger and better, next year” said Petkovich.
