North Beach and Trinity Aquinas will face off for the first time in the A Grade Grand Final this Saturday.

Despite finishing fifth on the ladder at the end of the home and away season, last year’s premiers Trinity Aquinas squashed any doubts they were battling a premiership hangover as they defeated Scarborough, University and Fremantle CBC in the finals series.

The Elimination Final against Scarborough was decided by just five points while their match against University in the Semi Final was won by six points. They defeated Fremantle CBC last weekend by 22 points to make it into their second consecutive grand final.

As Trinity Aquinas aim to make it back to back flags after their historic first A Grade win last season they face a dominant North Beach who finished as minor premiers with just three losses for the year.

North Beach sailed through the home and away season finishing on top of the ladder for the first time since 2010. They then enjoyed the week off before taking on Fremantle CBC in the Semi Finals. In a close encounter, North Beach kicked four goals in the final quarter to win by just seven points and advance straight through to the Grand Final.

With Trinity Aquinas tasting premiership success just last year, North Beach are no stranger to A Grade Finals having won thirteen premierships previously in the grade. Their last A Grade flag was in 2010 after winning seven straight from 2004-2010.

Both sides have met twice this season with North Beach winning both matches, the first in Round 5 by forty-one points and the second in Round 14 by just two points.

In the A Reserves North Beach will be looking to go one better this season after finishing as runner’s up in 2016. They finished the season as minor premiers by percentage before facing Trinity Aquinas in the semi-finals. They won the match by nine points to advance straight through to the Grand Final.

Scarborough on the other hand finished in fifth position before they defeated University, Whitford and Trinity Aquinas to make their way into the Grand Final.

North Beach last celebrated premiership success in the A Reserves in 2013 while Scarborough have not won a premiership in the grade since 1999.

In the Phil Scott Colts University finished the season as minor premiers before winning their Semi Final convincingly by 93 points over Curtin Uni Wesley.

Trinity Aquinas finished the year in second spot before losing their Qualifying final to Curtin Uni Wesley. In the Semi Final, they defeated North Beach before setting up a preliminary final against Curtin Uni Wesley. This time they got the job done defeating them by seven points to advance through to the season decider.

University are no strangers to Grand Finals in the Phil Scott Colts division having won five premierships since 2004 including three in a row from 2013- 2015. Their Grand Final loss just last year will also be playing on their mind as they head into the match. However, they come up against a side just as experienced with Trinity Aquinas just one win behind them on four, including three in a row from 2010-2012.
